Highland (Doyle) Township Cemetery

*George and Maranda (Towns) Doyle came to O’Brien County from Ohio in 1869 and purchased land in Section 12 of Highland Township. They lived there until 1887 when they moved to Primghar and built a new home. This house has been replaced. George Doyle gave the land for the Highland cemetery.

In the year 1869 Charles Stearns came west and in 1870 filed on a homestead on section 14 in Highland township. Five years later he was married to Miss Josephine Doyle, daughter of George and Maranda Doyle. Josephine and her husband, Charles Stearns, lived on their farm for more than forty years. Josephine Doyle Stearns died April 24, 1914. The internment was Sunday evening in the Highland township graveyard on her father’s homestead. The earliest burial for this cemetery was Maranda Doyle Jan. 6, 1874 and the last burial date in the Highland (Doyle) cemetery was Wendell Tjossem Oct. 7, 2018. There are 124 interments. Although today there is no trace of the early day Highland church, it did play an important part in the lives of the settlers in that rural community. The church was disbanded in 1926 and the structure removed.
